Game Vision Statement

The purpose of a design documentation is to express the vision for the game, describe the contents, and present a plan for implementation.
Introduction - "Islander Adventure" is an endless runner action game for mobile devices, pc's and MacBooks, and tablets. Influenced by both Nintendo games such as Super Mario Bros and mobile and tablet games such as Temple Run. The player must endure obstacles to stay alive and win the game.
Background - A list of videos can can help aid me in the process of creating the game:
"Create a 3D Endless Runner for Mobile"
"Health Bar Creation in Unity"
Gameplay - Set on a small deserted island in the South Pacific Ocean, you, the player represents an islander wishing to leave the island, as many of their friends have done the same. The aim of the game is to get from one side of the island to the other, where a wooden raft will be waiting for the islander indicating the you have won the game and can leave the island. You however, must endure and overcome a few obstacles along the way to get to the other side of the island.
These obstacles include, dodging falling rocks from the islands mountains, jumping on floating rocks and pieces of debris to survive lava, and swimming through deep water whilst dodging pieces of debris and rocks. These obstacles will be repeated throughout the game as it progresses, if you don't die. The obstacles will become increasingly harder through the level of the game, they will become faster in spawning and longer in duration.
The health bar indicates whether you are winning or losing. 3 bars are given to you at the start of the game, and will go down during the obstacle stages. For example, if you are enduring an obstacle and are unable to dodge a rock and it hits them, a health bar is taken away. If you fall in lava, another bar is taken off, and if you collide with a rock or debris whilst swimming, a bar is deducted. Once all 3 bars are gone, you automatically die and the game ends.
The obstacles will be repeated 2 - 3 times or more during the game, and once all the obstacles are done, and the islander is still alive, you win the game and are met with a wooden raft as the other side of the island, indicating your win. There is only one level in the game.
Using arrow keys or letters, you will be able to control the islander. Moving left to right, jumping up or crouching down, and swimming, you have full control of the islander.
Key Features -
Quick play, continuously running through the game.
Obstacles, the player must endure to win.
Health bar, the player has 3 bars of health.
One level, the game has one level to get through.
Obstacles get increasingly faster / harder as the game progresses.
Death, if the players health bar runs out the player dies and the game ends.
Genre - "Islander Adventure" is a 3D endless runner game, an adventure platform game that can go on for a period of time. It is a single player, one level, action game set in an alternate reality, with simulating obstacles.
Platforms - This game will preferably be launched and compatible with mobile devices such as iPhone and Android, iPads and Tablets. Other devices that this game may be launched on will be MacBooks and PC's.
Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteYour game sounds very fun. Cant wait to see how you develop it. I'm doing an endless runner game too so at least we can help each other with articles and info when we are designing it. I was wondering, you say there is a health bar for your player. What if you had randomised bottles of water that replenished your health through the game? Or something similar? Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Hey Tara, from reading this game vision statement I really like your idea for the game you want to make this year, Islander Adventure already caught my eye because I love the scenery of islands in games. I like how you've added a list of helpful resources to help aid you in the design.
ReplyDeleteThis game sounds very tropical what made you come up with this type of aesthetic? What happens when the lava touches the player? does the game stop immediately? or do you just lose a life?
The addition of different levels could have a lot of potential in this idea, like different islands with different obstacles.
This game idea has loads of potential and I'm really excited to see how it turns out best of luck with it Tara!
Hey Tara, I loved reading your vision statement. I am also doing an endless 3d running game, which i think seems the most achievable. There are plenty of resources online to aid us all through the process when we are creating our game. Have you ever considered adding animals? like a snake or a vulture ? I feel like that could be something to consider. I also agree with kevin's point adding water bottles, to help your players energy levels go up. When the player hits the obstacle is the game over? or will the player have a few lives.
ReplyDeleteI really love your idea and maybe we can help each other for resources to create the game.

Hey Tara,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a game I would defiantly want to play! I am also going to be making a 3D running game. I love your approach and vision for the design of the game, it seems quite interactive. Having multiple obstacles will be more intriguing for the player which it sounds like your game will defiantly have. I love the lava obstacle for the players, although I do think lava should be more of a penalty than falling debris for example. If you had a health bar taken away when failing to manuver obstacles I think lava should be instant death ie. GAME OVER!!! This adds some extra caution when a player is playing your game. I am excited to see this island adventure game at the end of your process. I hope this feedback helped.

Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteI really like the game idea since I love playing games like temple run and other games similar to the one you are creating. It sounds interesting and challenging. The obstacles that the islander has to avoid to reach to the other side of the island are really good but I suggest to also add a heart along the island while the player is playing in order to take it if the player has already lost a bar to have another chance to win the game. I liked how you wrote this blog post and the structure of it. Overall, the game looks intensely challenging and looking forward to play it.
Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteYour idea sounds great! Many people love endless runners (including myself) so this will be an interesting game to explore. Dodging rocks and falling items seem fun and will definately get the adrenaline pumping through the body. The health bar is a great idea because it will make you more focused on what youre doing instead of slowly dying. This game reminds me of temple run and I loved temple run myself 😁 its one of the best games or sure. Maybe you could add some other factor for example if the player hits something then thats it game over and they die so like a tree or something like that. I cant wait to see your idea develop and read more about the game.
