Introduction to a future whatever career I choose...

Hi there ! If you don't me already let me introduce myself. My name's Tara Coyne, I am 19 years old and I'm born and bred in a small town in Mayo, (yes I'm surrounded by farms and no it's not particularly fun). I am a Cancer sun, Capricorn moon, and Libra rising. I chose the CDM course in fifth year, after going through many similar courses and knowing I had no clue what career I wanted but also knowing I wanted to do something creative, I came across CDM. Cut to three years later, I've already started second year and now I finally have an idea of what I want to do after this course, that being a graphic designer.

Although I don't want to limit my options and having the opportunity to experience different career options within this course has been really helpful, once I started visual creativity in first year and design process in semester two, not only did I highly enjoy it, I felt it came natural to me. Of course it was a challenge to dive into something I have never done before (staying up till 3am watching Illustrator tutorials), I knew I'd get better at designing and that I did, now having a lot more confidence in my work. That's something I struggled with a lot last year, the constant comparison to everyone else and feeling like you're not good enough or whatever negative thought pops up. But this year it's different and having the experience and knowledge I have now that I didn't last year makes a huge difference. So to anyone who felt the same last year and might still do now you're not alone ! (cringe).

Onto hobbies and my favourites, where do I start? I watch A LOT of films and tv and I'm at the cinema every other week (I'm boring I know). Some of my favourite films would have to be The Truman Show, Captain Fantastic, The Craft, Beetlejuice, Midsommar (tbh anything Florence Pugh is in), or  honestly anything Horror for that matter. Favourite TV shows include but are not limited to; New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Community, Scrubs, Sex Education, Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things, Rick and Morty, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia and I feel like Im missing something. Bands / Singers / Artists I love; Paramore, Halsey, Phoebe Bridgers, Big Thief, Radiohead, Turnstile, The Cure, Fiona Apple, Bleached, Bully, Pillow Queens, and we'll be here all day if I keep going. My hobbies include, reading, writing, tarot cards, yoga, baking and anything I procrastinate for like a year and come back to every now and again.

I feel like I've written a lot already so I might leave it here but of course not before the pièce de résistance, my eight year old Lab/Pointer cross Dog, Oscar -

  3. Hi Tara!
    Love your big 3 signs.
I was the same as you when choosing CDM, I didn't have a clue what career path I wanted to go down but knew I wanted it to be creative and CDM seemed like a good choice because it was so diverse!
I'm glad you realised that you have a passion for graphic design and it's a career path you want to follow in the future.
I love The Truman Show, a classic film but so great!
Also love Beetlejuice, the film and musical version are amazing.
I'm a big fan of Florence Pugh myself, she is an amazing actress and anything she's in is amazing.
I've re-watched New Girl countless times, it's one of those funny TV shows you can kind of throw on in the background and still really enjoy.
Sex Education is one of my all time favourite series, it's hilarious!
I'm a big fan of Paramore, Halsey and Phoebe Bridger's music, definitely some of my top 10 artists!

I've loved getting to know you a bit better and loved reading your blog!

  4. Hey Tara,
I was once in your situation too; didn't know what I want to do in my future until I found this course and it is really interesting since we will experience everything related to design and creativity, which gives us lots of opportunities to be doing in the future. Stranger things is one of my favorite tv-shows too; it is just amazing.

Oscar is so cute and I hope I get a pet like Oscar one day. Hope to get to know more about you and wish you luck in your future.

  10. Hi Tara, after looking at your past work from year 1, I well believe you would make a fantastic Graphic Designer. (may need a few tips off you for myself!) It is always such a hard decision when leaving secondary school and deciding what you want to do in college, so I am glad you have found a course you are keen in! Last but not least... I am in love with your doggo, Oscar and his ball is the cutest thing <3

  12. Great Blog Tara. Thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I particularly liked and related to the segment about comparing yourself to your peers and feeling as though you may not be good enough. I recall viewing your final website project in first year and seeing how well organised your site was, I believe you have a bright future in Creative Digital Media Hope to see more blogs in the future.

  14. Hi Tara
Really like the layout that you have for the blog. I was really impressed with the work you did last year . I felt the same way through year one trying to compare my work to other peoples especially in visual creativity because I cant draw to save my life a stickman and that would be it. Also I haven't a clue about signs or moons hahaha. Looking forward to seeing work you do through out the year.

  15. Hey Tara,

I have to say your blog design is really cool, I love the font you've chosen and the colour palette really complements the text and other content in the blog! I was always very impressed with your work last year and you were definitely a standout student as far as I'm aware, and I think you would make a brilliant graphic designer.
I'd like to say I love horror movies too... but I'm a sucker for turning them off as soon as I get scared!

  16. Hey Tara,

Loving the blog aesthetic. I had the privilege of being in group 1 with you last year and delighted to be on campus with you this year! Think you were the first person I spoke to in college last year. You've got great taste in film and TV and obv Buffy is queen. I didn't know you liked Pillow Queens. I'm friends with the drummer so thats cool to read that you like them. See you in college!

  18. Hey Tara , great introduction post, any post that includes a pet I feel should get an automatic pass in the module. You've got a great taste in shows, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a classic, I think the character of Giles is the only thing that got me through the first lockdown to be honest. Best of luck with the rest of the year.
