Adventure Survival Game -

Brainstorming game ideas can be extremely helpful in the ideation process of game design, something I found helpful was writing down my ideas in a notebook and brainstorming there before typing this blog post. My first game idea is based on the adventure survival games I played as a child on the Nintendo. Super Mario Bros is a great reference to explain my concept. Based on an island, the player represents a stranded sailor who's boat washed up on the other side of the island, so the sailor must travel to the other side of the island, not before enduring many tasks along the way. These tasks include but are not limited too, dodging fallen rocks from the islands mountains, jumping on floating rocks and pieces of debris to survive lava, swimming through deep water without drowning, using ropes to get across mountains. The player must survive all these adventure challenges to make it to their boat. I chose Super Mario Bros as an inspiration as the old Super Mario Nintendo games were based on survival but adventure at the same time. I want the island to have different creative backgrounds per different tasks, so the player knows they're entering a different task to survive. The game could be played either in first person or third person depending on what would suit the game style best. I believe this game idea has potential to be created and has a good objective / concept.

The second idea I had created whilst brainstorming was based on the real life Escape Room game that can be played all around the country brought by many companies. I was thinking of a game that would fit well in the first person and landed on an Escape Room based game. Of course this game would be greatly simplified, using quick, easy and well known kids games as a means of tasks the player would have to try win to be able to open the door in the room and escape. These tasks would include, LED light sequence game, a jigsaw puzzle with the finished puzzle having numbers on it that would help in escaping the room, a ping pong cup game. There would be one game per wall of the room, so mini games in total that would need to be won in order to escape the room. The game would be dark in mood with an eerie feel, much different to the first game idea. As the player can't die during the game, to end the game there will be a timer set to one or a few minutes, in the event the player can't escape the room within the time frame they automatically die/ forfeit the game.

My third game idea is again based in a room, but this time it's a game of destiny, again can be done in the first person, the player is presented with 3 - 4 doors with different colours. Each door has something or someone behind it, and it is up to the player to decide which door they wish to open. Behind the door they choose could be another room, and the game moves on two or three more rounds, or the door could be hiding something sinister or gruesome that would kill the players character. This could be anything from someone shooting at the player, fire that bursts out at the player, flesh eating zombies. This game is based on luck, and the player doesn't know what is behind each door. After the rounds end and the player is still alive, they leave the house they were in, the house being a haunted house. The player automatically dies if they open a door with something behind it.

My final game idea is the simplest of the four games but one that can be relaxing and enjoyable. Designing your own living room / bedroom. This game requires no character but a 3D environment with objects one can move within the room. By tapping on the objects that are furniture, the player can change its colours. The player can move any item to anywhere in the room, in turn creating their own designed space. Only one room is in the game and can be chosen to be either a living room or bedroom before starting the game. A chest in the middle of the room that can also be moved can be opened to find more furniture inside, once the furniture already out in the room is designed. More colours could be unlocked or new pieces of furniture can be used. The room has multiple windows that a simple background garden can be seen out of and there's one door that cannot be opened in the room, for realistic purposes.
Hey Tara,
ReplyDeleteReally interesting ideas, and definitely different than any of the others I've read about so far! I'm a big fan of the escape room games on mobile! I love where you're going with the puzzle game idea, I think you could create something really cool if you mix that with the destiny and design ideas you have. I'm really excited to see what you can come up with, I'm sure it's going to be awesome!
Hey Tara,
ReplyDeleteI love your ideas, particularly the escape room style game. I'm a huge fan of puzzle games and I would totally recommend looking into the ' Professor Layton ' series for some more inspiration for different types of puzzles as the series has a focus on unique and interesting puzzles
Great ideas Tara but your escape room idea was definitely the best one.
ReplyDeleteWWW Task: Hi Tara ! I really like your idea for a relaxing make your own living room type of game. I really like to play these type of relaxing games I think they're very chill and something to just wind down to you and take your mind off everything. I think this game time very easy and accessible for a wide variety of people I think a lot of people would like to play it. I really like the idea you included about being able to choose what type of room you want to design I think that is really cool. Something I wonder is how you will be able to unlock new pieces of furniture and different colours what would you have to do to achieve the goal of unlocking new items. Something I think that will be very cool would be having a game able to add your own pictures on the wall for having it very customisable
ReplyDeleteHi Tara
ReplyDeleteReally like your ideas that you were brainstorming for your game.
I really like your first idea of the exploration/survival game. I think having different areas and backgrounds for different sections of the game is a good method of notifying the player that there starting a new section. I also really liked your last brainstorm idea, in terms of the simplicity of it but also how soothing or therapeutic it could be for a person to play it.
Looking forward to seeing what idea you decide to go with
