Week 9 Reading and Writing

Week 9 reading focused on reviewing all the previous reading and writing tasks and this type of task in general. Something I admittedly enjoyed doing each week was reading articles, academic papers and watching videos based on the topic, something that was change each week. I am a writer and love reading. I write poetry and writing about specific topics in general. In this course there's not a lot of reading or writing necessary, so do delve into this task each week was a nice change to all the practical work on software we had to do. I do believe the reading and writing tasks have been working well for me, they do help me concentrate on my overall work in the module, and finishing this task first each week has been a great start to all the other tasks due.

Using my blog as a means to create notes on the reading has also been a great help, especially in terms of my game, the topics we're given each week to study have all had a correlation with the game creation project. Learning about the idea of game design and what game elements are, have helped me understand the mechanics and design principles of how a game idea is created, and how a game is made from that through different important steps. I was able to understand this through the weekly reading tasks. I do believe from undertaking these tasks every week I've been able to concentrate more on reading what's important and what's not, understanding what's important in each paragraph, knowing to move on once you understand the reading.

In terms of my own game project, I do believe the reading tasks have helped me understand the mechanics of my own game. I was incredibly confused at first as to what area to focus on my game, but the reading and writing tasks helped immensely. The reading was interesting to delve into in terms of understanding the intricacies of what makes a game, I never realised how much thought, trial and error, and creative outlook is involved in making a game. My big takeaway from these tasks that I intend to carry over into my own game is that the target audience and players are the most important part of what makes a game a fun and good game. In the end it is about what game designers can make that's both enjoyable, fun, and addictive to play.

Looking forward I have realised I need to create a better schedule and time to set aside to start the reading and writing tasks each week. I have a habit of doing them right before the deadline and I feel I don't get the same benefit from them in contrast to doing them earlier in the week I'm able to focus on the tasks a lot more and understand and take in the information a lot easier.

  1. Hey Tara, I really like the layout of your blog looks organized and appealing. I agree with you that the reading tasks were really helpful in designing my game. At first I couldn't really manage my time so I would spend much time almost 3 hours everyday trying to finish the week's tasks but then the last couple of weeks I tried to manage to manage my time and get the required tasks done during the weekend so I would have time to finish the other simple tasks during the week and do the work for the other modules too. I also agree that adding the tech tasks was a nice addition since we can have extra marks that will help with our overall grade and that we could have fun while doing them.
